Self-test to detect Helicobacter pylori antigen in stool to aid in the diagnosis of gastritis or peptic ulcer.

Detailed test description

Gastric ulcers, also known as peptic ulcers, are sores that form on the lining of the stomach.

You can also get ulcers in a part of the intestine just behind the stomach called duodenal ulcers. Gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers (sometimes called peptic ulcers) cause the same symptoms, and treatment is the same for both.

The most common symptom of a peptic ulcer is a burning or gnawing pain in the center of the abdomen (stomach). Stomach ulcers are not always painful, and some people may experience other symptoms, such as indigestion, heartburn, acid regurgitation and nausea.

Stomach ulcers occur when the layer that protects the stomach lining from stomach acid is damaged.

This is usually the result of:

an infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)

taking anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen or aspirin - especially if they are taken over a long period of time or in high doses

It used to be believed that stress or certain foods could cause stomach ulcers, but there is little evidence that this is the case.

Stomach ulcers can affect anyone, but are more common in people over the age of 60. Men are more frequently affected than women.
